What it is
VIBE Afterschool is a free, open framework for running an AI skills program as an extracurricular activity. One afternoon a week for twelve weeks, a small group of students works alongside their teacher champion and a rotating group of 3–5 volunteer professionals to build a real project using AI tools. The semester ends with a public showcase. Every student ships one working project.
The framework is published under a Creative Commons license. Any school, teacher, or community group can run it. No approval from VIBE is required.

Liability and safety
Who supervises students?
The faculty champion is physically present for every session in its entirety. Students are never unsupervised or alone with guides.
Who are the volunteer professionals?
Community professionals recruited by the champion. All must pass the school’s standard background check before student contact. They sign a volunteer agreement prohibiting one-on-one student contact.
What about AI tool liability?
Tools are approved through the school’s existing technology process. All students are 13+. The program’s AI Acceptable Use Policy applies. Student data does not leave the school.
Is VIBE responsible for the program?
VIBE provides the framework and resources. The school retains full responsibility for supervision, student safety, and compliance with applicable law, consistent with any other extracurricular program.
Standards alignment
CTE / Workforce readiness
Aligns with Career and Technical Education frameworks in technology, IT, and business pathways. Students develop industry-relevant AI skills and professional network connections.
ISTE Student Standards
Addresses Empowered Learner, Knowledge Constructor, Innovative Designer, and Computational Thinker standards through project-based AI collaboration.
Future-ready skills
Problem framing, iterative building, professional communication, and portfolio development — skills that apply across every career path, not just technology.
Common board questions
Does this require a board vote?
Generally no — it is an extracurricular activity, not a curriculum change. Principal-level approval is typically sufficient. Check your district’s policy for non-school-affiliated volunteers.
What if it does not work?
Either party can end participation at any time. There is no contract, no financial commitment, and no required continuation.
What does the school need to provide?
A teacher willing to give an afternoon a week, a room with internet access, and standard background check coordination for guides. The framework, materials, and support are free.
